Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar is the stuff of legends, a small island off the coast of Tanzania, center of the former Arab slave trade. There are beautiful beaches, crystal clear water, and a lively old town.

Stone Town is famous for it's winding alleyways and handmade Arabic doors.

These young dancers were part of a week-long music festival.

...and the audience.

Every evening, street-vendors line the waterfront. The seafood is excellent.

This vendor is making sugar cane juice. The cane is squeezed through the rollers and the juice flows into the bucket. A few lime twists and it's a refreshing drink; slightly sweet, not at all sugary.

This is Matemwe Village on the Indian Ocean-side of Zanzibar Island. (The dark vertical bars are where I pasted 3 photos together.)

Swimming with these wild dolphins was a dream come true. This group routinely feed in the area and it took considerable effort to keep up. Even with large fins, I could only pace for about a minute on each pass.

Prison Island is a tiny island in the Stone Town harbor where the colonial powers housed it's prisoners. Today, there's a small restaurant overlooking a lovely beach.

Prison Island is also home to a protected colony of large tortoises. For a small "donation" I fed them spinach leaves. They were surprisingly affectionate; scratch under the front legs and they stand up on their toes and roll their eyes shut.
